How much wealth does a household in Germany have, by age? The figures from the Bundesbank survey

The median net wealth of all households is about 103,000 euro, 17,300 euro for under-35s and 241,100 euro for 55 to 64-year-olds. What the figures measure, what they do not, and why comparing with yourself a year ago says more than comparing with others.

Kurzantwort: According to the Bundesbank's household wealth survey (2023 wave), the median net wealth of a household in Germany is about 103,000 euro: half of households have less, half more. By the age of the oldest person in the household, the median (calculated by the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft from the Bundesbank survey) is 17,300 euro for under-35s and highest at 241,100 euro for 55 to 64-year-olds. The survey measures households, not individuals, including property and private pension provision, but excluding entitlements to the statutory pension.

The question "do I have enough wealth for my age?" cannot be answered with a table, but a table shows where other households stand and how skewed such distributions are. This article summarises what the Bundesbank measured in 2023 and explains how to read the figures without measuring yourself against them.

The figures: net wealth of private households in 2023

  • All households: median about 103,000 euro (Bundesbank: 103,200 euro, 2023 wave, published April 2025).
  • Households where the oldest person is under 35: median 17,300 euro (IW calculation based on the Bundesbank survey, as are the following age-group values). From 100,000 euro such a household is already in the wealthiest fifth of its age group.
  • Households where the oldest person is 55 to 64: median 241,100 euro, the highest of all age groups. After that the medians fall somewhat with age.
  • Top ten percent, under 35: more than 200,400 euro. Top ten percent, 55 to 64: more than 1,061,200 euro.
  • Households without a partner, under 35: median 9,800 euro. Couples living together, under 35: 42,300 euro.
  • Households without a partner, 55 to 64: median 79,800 euro. Couples living together, 55 to 64: 361,800 euro.
  • Home ownership: 7 percent of households under 35 own the home they live in, across all households 42 percent.

241,100 € — Median net wealth of households where the oldest person is 55 to 64: the highest age-group median in the 2023 survey.

What "net wealth" means here

The Bundesbank calculates assets minus debts. Assets include property, business assets, vehicles, valuables, bank balances, securities and the positive balances of private pension and life insurance policies as long as they are not yet being paid out. Future entitlements to the statutory pension are not included. Anyone who uses the table as a yardstick is therefore comparing wealth without one of the largest retirement income sources of many households.

How to read the figures

  • The median is not the average. The mean is about three times the median, because a few very large fortunes pull it up. The median describes the household in the middle.
  • Household, not person. The survey cannot assign wealth to individuals. A couple counts as one household with shared wealth, the figures for couples are well above those for households without a partner.
  • Property dominates. For many households, owner-occupied property is the largest single item in gross wealth.
  • Survey, not count. Very high wealth is under-captured in household surveys, and thresholds from surveys tend to come out somewhat low; the values in the middle are less affected than those at the top.
  • Age is only one variable. Income, household type, inheritance and region also play a large role.

What a comparison with the median does not say

The median describes what other households have, not what your household needs. These figures cannot answer a different question, but your own numbers can: how has your household's wealth developed over the last few years, and what does that mean for the coming decades, pension included? That is the idea behind the regular financial check-up: not finding out once where you stand, but seeing every few months whether the path has changed.

How much wealth does the average household in Germany have?
The median net wealth was about 103,000 euro in 2023 (Bundesbank: 103,200 euro): half of households have less, half more. The mean is far higher at about three times that, because a few very large fortunes raise it.
How much wealth should you have at 30?
There is no target value. For comparison: in households where the oldest person is under 35, the median in 2023 was 17,300 euro, 9,800 euro for households without a partner and 42,300 euro for couples living together.
How much wealth do people have at 60?
In households where the oldest person is 55 to 64, the median in 2023 was 241,100 euro, 79,800 euro for households without a partner and 361,800 euro for couples living together. The 55 to 64 age group has the highest median of all age groups.
Does the statutory pension count as wealth?
Not in the Bundesbank's wealth survey. The Bundesbank does not count future entitlements to the statutory pension as wealth. Private pension and life insurance policies count with their balance as long as they are not yet paid out.
At what point do you belong to the wealthiest ten percent?
Across all households from a net wealth of about 777,200 euro (2023). Within age groups the threshold (IW calculation) is more than 200,400 euro for under-35s and more than 1,061,200 euro for 55 to 64-year-olds.
