Minimum wage of 14.60 euro and a 633 euro Minijob limit from 2027: what changes for a household

From 1 January 2027 the statutory minimum wage rises to 14.60 euro an hour and the Minijob limit to 633 euro a month. What that means for a family's second income: more pay per hour, a slightly shifted edge to the transition band, and a figure that runs through the whole household picture.

Kurzantwort: From 1 January 2027 the statutory minimum wage is 14.60 euro an hour (2026: 13.90 euro). The Minijob limit, which is tied to the minimum wage, rises from 603 to 633 euro a month. With the same weekly hours, the same Minijob pays about 30 euro more gross a month. Someone who earned just over 603 euro in 2026 and sits below 633 euro in 2027 counts as a Minijob again rather than as being in the transition band.

Two numbers get quoted a lot at the turn of the year: a 14.60 euro minimum wage and a 633 euro Minijob limit. For a household, what matters is less what a single payslip says and more what the two numbers mean together: for the second income, for which hours are worth working, and for what ends up in the household's overall picture at year end.

What applies from 1 January 2027

The minimum wage rises from 13.90 euro to 14.60 euro an hour. The basis is the Fifth Minimum Wage Adjustment Ordinance (MiLoV5), published in the Federal Law Gazette 2025 I No. 268; it follows the Minimum Wage Commission's decision of 27 June 2025. The increase is enacted, not a proposal.

The Minijob limit (Geringfügigkeitsgrenze) is not a freely set number but follows a formula in § 8 para. 1a SGB IV: minimum wage times 130, divided by 3, rounded up to a whole euro. For 2026 that gives 13.90 times 130 divided by 3 = 602.33, rounded up to 603 euro. For 2027 it gives 14.60 times 130 divided by 3 = 632.67, rounded up to 633 euro. A figure of 634 euro does not match this formula. The 633 euro for 2027 follows from the enacted minimum wage under the statutory formula.

603 € → 633 € — Minijob limit per month, 2026 versus 2027. It grows with the minimum wage: minimum wage times 130 divided by 3, rounded up.

A household example: ten hours a week

The formula has a practical consequence: 130 divided by 3 is about 43.3 hours a month, or roughly ten hours a week. A Minijob paid at the minimum wage sits right at the limit on exactly that number of hours. As an illustration, a worked example and not a statement about any real job: a parent works ten hours a week at the minimum wage as a second income next to the partner's main job.

  • 2026: 13.90 euro times 130 divided by 3 is about 602 euro gross a month, roughly 7,228 euro a year.
  • 2027: 14.60 euro times 130 divided by 3 is about 633 euro gross a month, roughly 7,592 euro a year.
  • Difference at the same hours: about 30 euro a month or about 364 euro a year gross, around 5 percent.
  • Worked the other way round: 603 euro a month corresponds to only about 41.3 hours in 2027 instead of 43.4 hours. For the same amount, it takes slightly fewer hours in 2027.

These are gross figures. What stays in the household net depends on the type of employment and on contributions that this example deliberately does not work through.

The edge above: the transition band up to 2,000 euro

Above the Minijob limit the transition band begins, also called a Midijob. There the employee's share of contributions rises gradually until it reaches its full value at 2,000 euro of monthly earnings (§ 20 para. 2 SGB IV). The lower edge of this band moves with the Minijob limit: 603 euro in 2026, 633 euro in 2027. The 2,000 euro upper edge is fixed in the statute and does not move with the minimum wage.

For the household that means: a second income of 620 euro a month was in the transition band in 2026. At the same amount in 2027 it sits below the limit and counts as a Minijob. Conversely, an income needs slightly more than before in 2027 to move out of a Minijob into the transition band. If you are close to the limit, the change shows up in the contract and on the payslip at the turn of the year.

What this means beyond a single year

The Minimum Wage Commission sets the minimum wage afresh every two years, and the Minijob limit follows each time. A household's second income is therefore not a fixed quantity but moves up in steps with every adjustment. Over ten or twenty years that changes how much a part-time or Minijob income contributes to the overall picture. Adjustments after 2027 are not yet set; any calculation beyond 2027 is an assumption.

What is the minimum wage in Germany from 2027?
14.60 euro an hour from 1 January 2027, up from 13.90 euro in 2026. The basis is the Fifth Minimum Wage Adjustment Ordinance (MiLoV5), Federal Law Gazette 2025 I No. 268.
What is the Minijob limit in 2027?
633 euro a month, up from 603 euro in 2026. It comes from the minimum wage times 130 divided by 3, rounded up: 14.60 times 130 divided by 3 is 632.67, rounded up to 633 euro.
How many hours can I work in a Minijob in 2027?
It depends on the hourly wage. At the 14.60 euro minimum wage, the 633 euro limit is reached at about 43.3 hours a month, roughly ten hours a week. At a higher hourly wage, correspondingly fewer.
What is the transition band (Midijob)?
The earnings range above the Minijob limit up to 2,000 euro a month. There the employee's share of contributions rises gradually. The lower edge follows the Minijob limit (633 euro from 2027); the 2,000 euro upper edge is fixed by law.
When does the minimum wage rise again after that?
The Minimum Wage Commission sets it every two years. A value after 2027 has not yet been decided.
